‘Mad’ Rob Green sticks out like sore thumb as pundits predict Premier League’s top four

Former Premier League stopper Rob Green has sent social media into a frenzy after making an incredibly bold prediction for this season’s Premier League top four

Defending champions Manchester City are going for a hat-trick of titles this season – but can anyone stop them from winning three in a row?

That is the next goal for City boss Pep Guardiola, who has already achieved the feat in Spain (Barcelona, 2008-11) and Germany (Bayern Munich, 2013-16) and has won a total of four league titles in six seasons at City.

Goalkeepers are notoriously a little ‘out there’ but Rob Green’s Premier League top four predictions have left even the most open-minded fans with gaping jaws.

Ahead of the new campaign, the BBC asked 23 of their TV and radio pundits to name who they thought would be in the Champions League spaces come the end of the 2022/23 season.

Of the 23 pundits, all of them reckon Manchester City and Liverpool will seal the top two spots … except Green, who’s ambitiously tipped Manchester United to pip Jurgen Klopp’s side to second, in spite of the Red Devil’s chaotic pre-season.

There’s a smidge of optimism around Old Trafford at the moment given Erik ten Hag’s arrival, but of the six ‘big’ teams gunning for the top four, United have arguably had the worst summer break – strong pre-season results aside.

Their pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has turned into an awkward ‘mate, stop texting her, she isn’t interested’ kind of situation, while Cristiano Ronaldo’s graceful (*sarcasm*) attempts to escape the horrors of playing in the Europa League have loomed over the club like a fabulously well-groomed raincloud for two whole months.
